“If the money is provided, generators of four megawatts will be operated to ensure uninterrupted electricity to residents,” announced an official.
He added that more than 20,000 people would benefit from the facility if generators are made functional. Contrary to the past, G-B has been experiencing frequent power outages this summer as the damaged hydropower projects have not been fully repaired due to shortage of funds on part of the government.
“We are still reeling under the impact of last year’s devastating floods which damaged all the main power generation projects in Gilgit,” said an official of the provincial government.
He added that during the winter season when extreme cold grips the entire region, more than 22 hours of load-shedding was observed in most areas of G-B.
Sources informed that generators will be used only for Gilgit city where demand for power is rising each day.
