Gilgit-Baltistan: Mehdi Shah demanded to resolve the royalty issue of Diamer-Bhasha Dam

CHILAS, Oct 18 (APP): Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar on Tuesday said the Diamer Bhasha dam would usher in a new era of development in the country. Addressing at a ceremony here where Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani laid the foundation stone of the dam project, the Minister said special importance was being given to the development of water resources. He said special inter-ministerial committee was already in place to ensure provision of just compensation to the affected people of the dam site.Mian Manzoor Ahmad Watoo, Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan said the Diamer Bhasha dam was the only source of cheap electricity generation. He said Rs 42 billion had been allocated as compensation to the affected people through a transparent manner.
He said the dam would open new vistas of development and ensure employment generation for the local people.
Chief Minister GB Syed Mehdi Shah said the dam had the support of all political parties which would not only fulfill the energy requirements but would also help getting rid of non-productive thermal projects.
He demanded to ensure employment locals for the project, resolving the royalty issue, and upgradation of Babusar-Chilas road and the 110-km portion of KKH which will be affected by the dam.
He asked for conducting a new survey of Benazir Income Support Programme in Gilgit Baltistan and for the announcement of relief packages in flood and rain-affected areas.
