Gilgit-Baltistan:Former Judges’ Appointment in GB’s Appellate Court

Islamabad (BR):The Attorney General for Pakistan, Maulvi Anwarul Haq, on Friday submitted before the Supreme Court that only the Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has the jurisdiction to entertain the plea relating to appointment of former judge there.A two-member bench of the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing a petition, challenging appointment of former judges as chief judge or judge of the Supreme Appellate Court of GB.

The counsel for the petitioner, Muhammad Ikram Chaudhry, apprised the bench that Legislative Assembly of GB had unanimously passed a resolution that Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court was not constituted according to the constitution.

It had demanded to constitute the court as per the constitution of Pakistan, he added.Chaudhry prayed for more time to present the case on which the bench adjourned further hearing of the case for indefinite period.

The petition was filed by Dr Ghulam Abbas, a social activist who is also chairman of the Gilgit-Baltistan National Movement.
