Karachi(Monitoring Desk):Northern parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and adjoining Gilgit-Baltistan will receive weather warning stations and threat detection centres to monitor the risks associated with glacial lakes in these areas, according to the Pakistani Meteorological Office.

“Technical facilities will be set up in Bagrot valley in Gilgit-Baltistan and Drongagh in Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where melting glaciers have developed dangerous lakes that are posing threats to local communities,” Mushtaq Ali Shah, director of the Met Office, Peshawar, told Central Asia Online.

The facilities will be established under the recently launched, UNDP-funded $76m (Rs. 7.2 billion) programme “Reducing Risks and Vulnerabilities from Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in Northern Pakistan,” he said.
