Gilgit (D.Times): Provincial minister for Excise and Taxation Naseer Khan disclosed that contractors supplying private vehicles to government in Gilgit-Baltistan are earning through unfair means. He claimed that the vehicles provided are smuggled and Non Custom Paid (NCP).
Talking to media he said that contractors have been deceiving the provincial government by providing NCP vehicles for the use of internal security. As per the terms and conditions of the contract, they were supposed to provide legal and registered vehicles.
“Contractors are receiving the rent according to the tender of legal and registered vehicles while the rented vehicles are NCP. The rent of NCP vehicles is much lower than the registered vehicles’’ he said.
He vowed to take strict action against the contractors who were involved in the fraud.
One would wonder as what mechanism was in mind to check illegal vehicles if it was constituted in the contract, that NCP vehicles are no-no. How that mechanism was bypassed?
When asked about the proposal seeking purchase of vehicles for internal security, he said that any such move would add burden on the exchequer. The officers are not going to use the vehicles properly as nobody takes care of government property. The maintenance of the vehicles in that case will be a difficult and costly job, he said.
Answering a question regarding financial crisis he said that the matter shall be raised in the Cabinet Meeting. He, however, declined to comment on the financial crunch as, he said, the federal government will not like discussion on the matter in the media.
