Islamabad (News): The Election Commission of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and National Database & Registration Authority (Nadra) have signed a contract for preparation of computerised electoral rolls to be used in upcoming local body elections as well as general elections for Legislative Assembly, a spokesman of Nadra said.
“Error-free computerised electoral rolls for Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) with a vision of ‘one CNIC, one vote’ will strengthen democracy in region,” said Nadra Chairman Tariq Malik in his message to the GB Chief Election Commissioner.
Earlier, GB CEC informed the Nadra chairman that the current Legislative Assembly of GB carried out amendment according to which CNIC has been made mandatory for legislation and casting a vote. Projected population of GB is 656,545 whereas Nadra has issued 609,261 CNICs in the region.
The ceremony in this regard was held at Election Commission Secretariat, Gilgit in which the GB chief election commissioner and director general National Data Warehouse signed a contract. This session was attended by the chief minister Gilgit-Baltistan, deputy speaker Legislative Assembly and cabinet ministers. On this occasion, the chief election commissioner informed participants that GB EC intends to take advantage of Nadra’s experience of preparing electoral rolls. DG Nadra briefed participants about salient features of computerised electoral rolls system which will result in achieving the Nadra chairman’s vision ‘One CNIC, One Voter’ goal. The GB chief minister in his speech said that preparation of computerised electoral rolls will result in strengthening democratic process and will ensure that right of franchise of each citizen remains protected.
