GILGIT (Dawn): The Gilgit-Baltistan government on Saturday constituted a special task force to take action against illegal power users, including official residences, offices, commercial and industrial units.
Relevant officials said the task force consisted of water and power department and the local administration officials which would conduct raids under the supervision of magistrates.
They said that the task force would fine power thieves and defaulters and send them to jail.
Meanwhile, the Federal Investigation Agency conducted raids at the offices of the education directorate, education and finance ministers and secretary finance and disconnected power supply to them for using it illegally.
The FIA team led by deputy director Babar Khan also raided some other offices and cut their power supply.
“The raids are part of the ongoing campaign against power theft throughout the country,” said an official, adding cases were registered against meter readers for overlooking the power theft in their respective areas.The official said the FIA seized 12 air conditioners only from the education directorate.
He said offices of ministers and secretaries turned out to be defaulters of the water and power department as they had not paid bills outstanding against them since long.
Meanwhile, the water and power department has also launched an awareness raising campaign to discourage power misuse.
Sources said the home department summoned the FIA officials and ask them to refrain from raiding government offices without prior approval of the authorities concerned.
